A short Sunday briefing on three developments not covered in our previous edition: music generation in Gemini, more convenient live translation, and a research technique for observing living cells over time. These reports were published September 4, not announced today. The common thread is making useful work easier to repeat without interrupting the process being studied or supported.

Gemini adds more control over AI-generated music

Google says Lyria 3.5 is available in Gemini and the Gemini API. The app adds genre selection, vocal or instrumental options, templates, and a choice of shorter or longer tracks. Google describes improvements in vocals and arrangements; those quality claims have not been tested by this publication.

Live translation gets easier to keep running

Google Translate now lets Android users keep live translations running while using another app or locking the screen. On iOS, users can listen through the phone's earpiece, a feature already on Android. Google says background translation support for iOS is still coming, so the two platforms do not yet have identical features.

For multilingual work and travel, fewer app interruptions can matter as much as new features. Test accuracy in your actual environment, and obtain consent before capturing other people's conversations.

Studying gene activity without destroying the cell culture

MIT reports a Broad Institute and MIT method that engineers cells to export RNA in virus-like particles. Sampling the surrounding liquid lets researchers track gene activity repeatedly in living cell populations. The work was demonstrated in laboratory cell systems, including organ-on-a-chip models. It is a research tool, not a treatment or a proven clinical test.

Better observation can unlock better experiments. Following a biological system over time may reveal changes that a destructive, one-time measurement misses, while the limits of laboratory models still matter.
